Stamp Simply Challenge #29- Color Blocking
Keyword ssnotime29-There is no time limit. You can play this challenge and upload yourproject at Splitcoastand/or your Blog, anytime at all! You can play as many times as you like!!! The point is to keep it simple, quick and have fun!!! Please link back here.
The challenge this week is to make a color blocked background for your card.I love the look of color blocking, always so neat and organized, but I often forget about doing it. And if you are not familiar with color blocking, what I mean is exactly what the words imply — to make blocks of color and piece them together to make a background — kind of like piecing together a quilt.
FOR THIS CHALLENGE I want you to:
- Use at least 3 different blocks for your background, and you may use as many as you wish, but at least 3 blocks. Use as many or few colors as you like.
- You may use anything you like — plain cardstock, cardstock you have stamped on, designer paper — whatever suits your fancy.
- You may mat your blocks with borders in between, or you may butt them up against each other. You may have free-floating blocks.
- Use your own imagination — just have fun!!!
- Remember, there is NO WRONG WAY to do this challenge. My challenges are not about rules, they are about creating and encouraging the creative process within each of us — we all interpret and see things differently – and that’s the beauty of it all!!!
As always, try to stick with our overall theme of *stamping simply*. Here are some samples:
Check out Julie Koerberssample.
Check out Dee Jacksons sample.
Check out Tammy Hershbergers sample.
And my super simple sampleis below.
Remember when you upload to use the keyword above, followed by a comma. Please come back here to post (as a comment) that youve played, and provide a linksowe can check out your card right away. You can find all cards uploaded for this challenge by clicking Gallery Submissions Here.
Some wanting to play said they have never uploaded before. If thats you and you need help uploading, just go to my Challenge No. 1 here.
Here’s an ultra simple color blocked sample. I used 3 colors to create my blocks and mounted them on a black mat — can’t get any simpler! I then tied on a ribbon and mounted a simple image on top with mounting tape — done!!! All the color gives this simple card a little life and zip!!! Fun technique!!! I used my Copics again to color this image — still practicing — I was hoping for more variation in color on the poppy, and though I used 3 different color markers — I didn’t get what I was after, but it still looks OK – and that’s what I am loving with these markers — they allow someone who has been seriously coloring challenged all her life tocolor a simple image with presentable results!!! Now THAT makes me happy!!! Still learning — and it’s so much fun!!!
If you’d like to use my measurements for your color blocks, here they are:
- Card: 5 1/2 x 4 1/4
- Black Mat: 5 1/4 x 4
- Green: 5 1/8 x 1 3/8
- Yellow: 3 x 2 3/8
- Orange: 2 x 2 3/8
Supplies used:
- Stamps: Bloomin’ Beautiful
- Paper: Black, White, Green Galore, Summer Sun, Pumpkin Pie
- Ink: Brilliance Graphite Black, Copics to Color from Ellen Hutson
- Accessories: Black Dotted Sheer Ribbon from Flourishes, Rectangle Nestabilities by Spellbindersavailable at Flourishes, Mounting Tape
Copic colors used:
- Flower: Y19, YR09, R14
- Leaves: YG03, YG17
- Flower Center: Black 100
- Shading: C1, 0
A NOTE ABOUT RIBBON AT FLOURISHES: I know many of you have been trying to find the black organdy ribbon at Flourishes and it hasn’t been there — please be assured they DO HAVE IT — theyhave just been super busy and didn’t get it on the site. It should be posted on the site sometime today, so please check back!!! They have the MOST GORGEOUS ribbons by May Arts — totally lucsious!!! My FAVORITES!!!
Thanks much for stopping by — hope you can find some time to play this weekend, or any time at all!!! Have a great weekend everyone!!!

Wow Sharon – you do simple elegance better than anyone I know! This card is lovely! Love the colors and the image. After I looked at your directions – I’m not sure I really followed your directions!!! OOOPPS! I didn’t really make a background. Well, maybe. I’ll just say I took creative license!! LOL! Thanks again for another fun challenge!
This is gorgeous, Sharon! I love the colors for the blocks, and I think your flower turned out gorgeous! Great depth of color! Thanks for another fun challenge! It’s great to be a part of your team! 🙂
Sharon, you wow me every time I get your updates. This card is so fresh!!!!! We really don’t get real bad weather here (tropical island, with rain, but that’s about it). But for those in areas where there is lots of snow like MICHIGAN 😀 it’s a perfect card to get ready for spring. I have not played in a couple of weeks, but I think I can handle this one.
TFS
totally gorgeous!! I love the bright colors. The ribbon really pops!
Gorgeous colors, The flower really pops.
Gonna have to try this one.
I love this!! I like the black behind it all and in the words of Sharon, it made it POP!! LOL Great card to help us THINK SPRING. Can’t believe it for South Dakota, WE even still have snow. TFS
Another fantastic card Sharon! The colors you chose for the blocks are beautiful and vibrant. I think your coloring on the poppy is amazing too. I hope to make a card for this later.

Your card is so beautiful, Sharon! This challenge looks like a lot of fun, and I hope to make a card this weekend. You rock!
Sharon, This is great! I love the simplicity and yet the different colors makes it a WOW card. Great idea.
I have a question about the Copic markerd. Did you get both the 24A and 24B sets? If so, are you finding you are using one more than the other?
Also, is there anything else I would need, such as a multiliner?
I just don’t know where to start and any help will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much!
Joan
Awesome! I love the colors you chose and great flower Sharon! Can’t wait to play later. Stacy

Hi Sharon! You are right – I love how color blocking looks, but don’t use it very often. Here’s an oldie but goodie that I had posted on my Splitcoast gallery back in August 2005. I just added it to my blog for you to check out, and I hope to find some stamping time tonight to make a newer one!

My card is “simply rubbed” rather than “simply stamped” … hope that’s okay. Color Blocking is one of my favorite styles.
